Nigerians react as Twitter announces Africa HQ in Ghana

On Monday 12, April 2020, Twitter announced that it is establishing its Africa presence by announcing its Africa Headquarters in Ghana.

According to Twitter, it chose Ghana because it is “a champion for democracy, supporter of free speech, online freedom, and the Open Internet, of which Twitter is also an advocate.”

“Furthermore, Ghana’s recent appointment to host The Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area aligns with our overarching goal to establish a presence in the region that will support our efforts to improve and tailor our service across Africa,” the statement adds.

Reacting to the news on the platform, some Nigerian citizens believe that they have the biggest social media users in Africa, hence, Nigeria should have been chosen as for the headquarters.

A Nigeria Twitter user by the name Honorable Oke wrote;

“Another Big L for Nigeria who despite having the biggest active social media users, we got over looked for Ghana. This is obviously because of the anti-business policies of APC and Buhari. Shameful.”

A second user by the name Daddy MO also commented;

“gIaNt oF aFriCa” Nigeria in the mud again. Na only jollof rice wars and past glory dey our corner. When it comes to the reality on ground, it’s not even close concerning how we are viewed and perceived.

Another user by the name Imo Udomesiet added;

“This right here is one outcome of Nigeria continually failing its citizens. I want to believe that Nigerians use twitter more than other African nations but Twitter can’t open offices in Nigeria because of issues around governance. Just read the “why Ghana” bit. Very sad indeed.”

“Largely based on textbook definition Nigeria is the largest economy in Africa & probably the largest social media engaging ecosystem in Africa as well. Sadly, the nature of political highjacking, state capture, bad governance & more decadence has made us chop another “L” again!” Anana also commented.
